A new study shows that finasteride, a medication used to treat male pattern hair loss, works to block the conversion of testosterone to DHT. DHT is one of the most commonly occurring hormones in the body, causing hair loss. Studies have shown that many people experience some degree of hair loss after taking finasteride.
DHT is the hormone that causes hair follicles to shrink, leading to thinning hair and eventual baldness. The drug's primary function is to inhibit the conversion of testosterone to DHT, thereby blocking the activity of DHT enzymes.
Finasteride was originally tested in patients with androgenetic alopecia (male pattern hair loss). The drug's active ingredient is finasteride, and it works by preventing the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT).
In this study, researchers evaluated the results of more than 700 people who took finasteride for at least two years before assessing their overall health.

The researchers also found that finasteride is effective for men who are experiencing male pattern hair loss, such as thinning hair at the temples and frontal hairline. In men who have low levels of DHT, finasteride may be more effective. However, in men with male pattern hair loss, finasteride has a modest effect on hair loss, and some studies have shown that it does not affect hair growth.
